A weir is a long, horizontal notch in a dam, barrier, or pipe used to measure, control, or divert water flow. In plumbing and drainage, weirs are found in wastewater treatment plants, flow measurement devices, and certain fixtures like grease traps. The water level over the weir’s crest is proportional to the flow rate, allowing for accurate flow measurement. Weirs are used to maintain desired water levels, regulate flow, and ensure proper drainage. Regular inspection and maintenance of weirs help maintain accurate flow measurement, prevent blockages, and ensure system efficiency.
