A water hammer arrestor is a device installed near a fixture or valve to absorb the hydraulic shock caused by water hammer. It contains a spring-loaded piston or diaphragm that compresses when a sudden pressure surge occurs, preventing the shock from being transmitted through the plumbing system. Water hammer arrestors are commonly used in washing machine lines, dishwashers, or fast-closing valves to reduce noise and protect pipes from damage. Proper installation and periodic inspection of water hammer arrestors help maintain their effectiveness and ensure system longevity.
