Water hammer is a loud banging noise caused by hydraulic shock when a valve or faucet is closed suddenly, stopping the flow of water abruptly. This sudden stoppage creates a pressure surge, causing pipes to vibrate and produce noise. Water hammer can damage pipes, fittings, and valves over time, leading to leaks or system failure. To prevent water hammer, devices like water hammer arrestors, air chambers, or pressure regulators are installed to absorb the shock and maintain pressure balance within the system.
