The uniformity coefficient (UC) is a measure used to describe the distribution of particle sizes in a granular filter medium, such as sand or gravel, used in water filtration systems. It is calculated by dividing the size of the particles that make up 60% of the sample (D60) by the size of the particles that make up 10% of the sample (D10). A lower UC value indicates a more uniform particle size distribution, leading to more effective filtration and reduced clogging. Understanding the uniformity coefficient helps in selecting the right filtration media for efficient water treatment and system performance.
