The trap weir is the interior wall or projection located at the outlet side of a plumbing trap, which helps retain the water seal by preventing it from draining completely. The weir determines the depth of the water seal and is designed to maintain a consistent barrier against sewer gases. Inadequate trap weir design or installation can lead to siphoning, evaporation, or loss of the water seal, allowing odors to escape. Proper maintenance of the trap and weir ensures effective odor control and compliance with plumbing codes.
