A trap primer is a device used to maintain the water seal in a plumbing trap, preventing it from drying out and allowing sewer gases to enter the living space. It connects to the cold water supply and periodically releases a small amount of water into the trap, keeping it filled. Trap primers are commonly used in floor drains, especially in areas that are infrequently used, such as basements or mechanical rooms. Proper installation and regular testing of trap primers ensure their functionality, maintaining the water seal and preventing odor or gas intrusion.
