In plumbing, a dam refers to a barrier built into the trapway of a toilet to slow down the flow of water during a flush, aiding in the buildup of pressure for an effective flush. The dam ensures that enough water is retained in the bowl before being released into the sewer line, optimizing the flushing process and helping to clear waste efficiently. Dams are also found in certain shower drains or floor drains, where they act as barriers to prevent backflow and maintain water levels for effective drainage. The design and height of a dam within a trapway or drain must be carefully calculated to balance effective water flow with pressure control, minimizing the risk of overflow or clogs.
