Soft water is water that has a low concentration of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. Unlike hard water, soft water does not cause scale buildup in pipes or water heaters, making it more efficient for cleaning, bathing, and cooking. Soft water is often produced using water softeners, which replace hardness minerals with sodium or potassium ions through ion exchange. The benefits of soft water include longer-lasting plumbing fixtures, reduced energy consumption in water heaters, and improved performance of soaps and detergents.
