Oakum is a loosely woven hemp rope treated with tar or oil, traditionally used to seal joints in cast iron pipes. It is packed into the joint before pouring molten lead over it, creating a durable and watertight seal. Oakum has been used for centuries in plumbing and shipbuilding due to its water-resistant properties. While modern plumbing systems often use rubber gaskets or sealants, oakum is still occasionally used in historical restorations or repairs of older cast iron plumbing systems. Proper packing of oakum ensures a tight, leak-proof joint, preventing water seepage and maintaining system integrity.
