Natural gas is a colourless, odourless fuel primarily composed of methane, with smaller amounts of other hydrocarbons like ethane, propane, and butane. It is commonly used as an energy source for heating, cooking, and water heating in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. To make it detectable, an odorant (usually mercaptan) is added for safety. Natural gas requires proper venting, leak detection, and adherence to local building codes during installation and maintenance to prevent hazards like explosions or carbon monoxide poisoning. Regular inspection of gas lines, fittings, and appliances ensures the safe and efficient use of natural gas in plumbing systems.
