A leach field, also known as a drain field or absorption field, is a component of a septic system designed to disperse and filter effluent from the septic tank into the surrounding soil. It consists of a series of perforated pipes or chambers buried in a bed of gravel or sand, allowing wastewater to percolate into the ground for natural filtration. The leach field removes contaminants and pathogens from the effluent as it moves through the soil layers, making it safer for the environment. Proper maintenance, including regular pumping of the septic tank, minimizing water usage, and preventing soil compaction, is crucial to ensure the efficiency and longevity of the leach field.
