Ionisation is the process by which atoms or molecules gain or lose electrons, resulting in the formation of charged particles called ions. In plumbing and water treatment, ionisation can occur naturally or be induced to alter the chemical composition of water. For example, ionisation is used in water disinfection systems, where silver or copper ions are released to eliminate bacteria and other pathogens. It is also a fundamental concept in processes like ion exchange, where ions in water are replaced with different ions to soften the water or remove specific contaminants. Ionisation is critical in maintaining water quality, adjusting pH levels, and preventing corrosion or scaling in plumbing systems.
