Hydroxyl refers to the chemical group or ion, consisting of one oxygen atom bonded to one hydrogen atom (OH-). It is found in water (H₂O), alcohols, and many other chemical compounds. In water treatment and plumbing, hydroxyl ions play a role in pH balance, influencing the acidity or alkalinity of water. A higher concentration of hydroxyl ions increases the water’s alkalinity, while a lower concentration indicates more acidic water. Maintaining the proper hydroxyl balance is crucial for water quality management, as it affects corrosion rates, scaling potential, and the effectiveness of chemical treatments. Hydroxyl radicals, a related reactive species, are sometimes used in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to break down organic contaminants in water, providing an effective method for water purification.
