Hard water is natural water that contains high levels of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. These minerals are picked up as water passes through rocks, soil, or mineral-rich aquifers. While hard water is not harmful to human health, it can cause issues in plumbing systems, such as scaling, reduced soap efficiency, and increased wear on pipes, fixtures, and appliances like water heaters and dishwashers. The buildup of mineral deposits, known as limescale, can reduce water flow, lower heating efficiency, and lead to higher energy costs. Water softening systems, which use ion exchange or chemical treatment, are often installed to reduce water hardness and protect plumbing systems from mineral deposits. Regular maintenance of softeners and descaling treatments are important to manage hard water effectively.
