In a pump, a gland is the component that holds one half of the stuffing box, which is used to create a seal around the pump shaft to prevent leaks. The gland compresses the packing material within the stuffing box, maintaining a tight seal that prevents fluid from escaping along the shaft while still allowing the shaft to rotate. Glands are found in various types of pumps, including centrifugal, submersible, and sewage pumps, where effective sealing is crucial for maintaining pressure, preventing leaks, and ensuring safety. Regular maintenance of the gland, including adjusting the compression or replacing worn packing, is necessary to maintain the pump’s performance and prevent potential failures due to leaks or pressure loss.
