Giardiasis is a disease caused by an infection with the Giardia parasite, often contracted by ingesting contaminated water. The parasite can be found in untreated surface water, well water, or inadequately treated municipal water supplies. Symptoms of giardiasis include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. In plumbing and water treatment, preventing giardiasis involves ensuring proper filtration, disinfection, and maintenance of water supply systems to eliminate the parasite. Water treatment methods such as chlorination, UV disinfection, and reverse osmosis are effective in removing Giardia from drinking water. In addition to water treatment, proper backflow prevention measures are essential to avoid cross-contamination that could introduce the parasite into potable water systems.
