In plumbing, the term “gauge” refers to the thickness of stainless steel or other metal materials used in pipes, fittings, and fixtures. It is an important measurement that affects the strength, durability, and performance of metal components in plumbing systems. The gauge number inversely indicates the thickness: a lower gauge number means thicker metal, while a higher gauge number indicates thinner metal. For example, a 16-gauge stainless steel sink is thicker and more durable than an 18-gauge sink, making it better suited for heavy-duty applications. Gauges are also used in measuring the wall thickness of metal pipes, influencing their pressure rating, flow capacity, and resistance to impact. In addition to thickness, gauge is used in pressure gauges, which measure the water pressure within a plumbing system, helping maintain optimal flow and prevent issues like water hammer or insufficient pressure.
