Galvanising is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron to prevent rusting and corrosion. This process is commonly used in plumbing for manufacturing pipes, fittings, and other metal components that require enhanced durability and resistance to moisture. Galvanised pipes were traditionally used for water supply lines, offering a longer lifespan than uncoated iron pipes. While galvanised pipes are less common in modern plumbing due to the availability of copper, PVC, and PEX materials, they are still used in outdoor installations, irrigation systems, and industrial applications. The zinc coating acts as a sacrificial layer, corroding instead of the underlying metal, thus extending the life of the pipe. Regular inspection and maintenance are essential for galvanised components, as the coating can wear over time, leading to potential rust and leaks.
