First draw” refers to the initial water that comes out of a faucet after the water has been sitting in pipes or plumbing fixtures for an extended period, typically overnight. This water can contain higher levels of metals, such as lead or copper, which leach from pipes, solder, or fixtures, especially in older plumbing systems. First draw water is often tested for contaminants in water quality assessments, as it provides an indicator of potential plumbing-related pollution. To minimize exposure to metals or other contaminants, it is recommended to flush the faucet for a few minutes before using the water for drinking or cooking. First draw samples are particularly important in schools, residential buildings, and other facilities where water safety is a concern.
