Extinction pop is a term used to describe the sudden sound of a flashback that occurs when a burner is turned off in a gas appliance. This sound is caused by the rapid combustion of remaining gas in the burner, resulting in a popping or snapping noise. While extinction pop is generally harmless, frequent or loud occurrences may indicate issues with gas flow, burner adjustment, or venting. In plumbing and HVAC systems, extinction pop can be found in gas-fired water heaters, boilers, and furnaces. To minimize extinction pop, regular maintenance of gas appliances is recommended, including checking burner alignment, cleaning ports, and ensuring proper venting to maintain safe and efficient operation.
