An expansion tank is a small tank designed to absorb excess pressure caused by the expansion of water when it is heated in a closed plumbing system. It is commonly installed in hot water heating systems, boilers, and water heaters to prevent pressure buildup, which could otherwise damage pipes, valves, or fixtures. The expansion tank contains a diaphragm or bladder that separates the water from an air cushion, allowing the water to expand safely without increasing system pressure. Expansion tanks help maintain system balance, reduce wear on components, and prevent issues like water hammer or thermal expansion. Regular inspection and maintenance of expansion tanks, including checking air pressure and diaphragm integrity, are essential to ensure their effectiveness and prolong the lifespan of the plumbing system.
