A drip leg, also known as a sediment trap, is a stub-end pipe placed at a low point in a gas line or steam system to collect condensate, debris, or sediment that may accumulate in the system. The drip leg functions as a safety measure, preventing contaminants from reaching gas-fired appliances, regulators, or control valves, where they could cause damage or malfunction. Drip legs are typically installed with a valve at the bottom to allow for easy draining and maintenance. In steam systems, they are used to remove condensate and maintain efficient system operation, reducing the risk of water hammer and improving heat transfer. Regular inspection and draining of the drip leg help ensure safe and effective operation of gas and steam systems.
