A crown-vented trap is a type of trap in a drainage system that features an air admittance valve attached near the top of the trap, often referred to as the “crown” of the trap. The vent is designed to allow air to enter the drainpipe, preventing siphonage and maintaining the water seal in the trap. This design helps ensure that sewer gases do not escape into the living space and that wastewater flows smoothly through the system. Crown-vented traps are typically used in situations where traditional venting is difficult or where retrofitting additional vent lines is impractical. While effective in some scenarios, crown-vented traps must be carefully designed and installed to prevent issues like drying out or clogging, which can compromise their effectiveness.
