A butterfly valve is a type of serviceable valve used to regulate water flow in a plumbing system. It consists of a rotating disc, called the “butterfly,” which is mounted on a central shaft. When the valve is open, the disc rotates to allow water to flow through, and when closed, the disc rotates to block the flow. Butterfly valves are commonly used in water distribution systems, irrigation networks, and HVAC systems due to their compact design, quick operation, and low-pressure drop. They are available in various sizes and materials, such as stainless steel, PVC, and cast iron, making them suitable for both potable water and industrial applications. Butterfly valves can be manually operated using a handle or lever, or they can be automated with electric or pneumatic actuators. They are valued for their durability, cost-effectiveness, and ability to handle large flow rates with minimal space requirements.
