BHP, or brake horse power, is a unit of measurement that indicates the amount of power a motor or engine can produce before losses due to friction and other components are considered. In the context of plumbing and HVAC systems, BHP is often used to specify the power capacity of pumps, compressors, and other motor-driven equipment. For example, a water pump’s BHP determines how effectively it can move water through a system, overcoming resistance like pipe friction, elevation changes, and system pressure. The higher the BHP, the more powerful the pump or motor, making it suitable for more demanding applications, such as commercial plumbing or large HVAC systems. Accurate measurement of BHP is essential for selecting the right equipment to ensure efficiency and reliability in water and air handling systems.
