An absorption field, also known as a leach field or drain field, is an essential component of septic systems. It is a network of underground pipes or trenches designed to distribute wastewater from the septic tank into the surrounding soil for natural filtration. The absorption field treats wastewater by allowing it to percolate through the soil, where bacteria break down organic matter and neutralize harmful pathogens before it reaches groundwater. Proper design and maintenance of the absorption field are critical for the system’s efficiency and environmental safety. Factors like soil type, slope, and the size of the field influence the absorption rate. Common issues that can affect absorption fields include clogging, oversaturation, and root intrusion, all of which can lead to system failure and contamination.
